What is the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors?

The Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors is an independent organization of construction and property professionals. It is headquartered in the United Kingdom, but it is growing rapidly in the United States and other parts of the world. RICS has over 100,000 members that are referred to as “chartered surveyors”.

RICS provides continuing education programs, awards credentials to qualified professionals, and sets minimum standards for its members around the world. Additionally, the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors tries to be a helpful resource to its members by providing education and organization. The professional association also attempts to use its power to influence policy and ensure the corporate responsibility of its members.

Types of Professionals

Members may include:

- Real estate appraisers
- Project managers
- Land surveyors
- Financiers
- Developers

Memberships

The Royal Institution of Charter Surveyors offers three types of membership:

1. Members (MRICS)

2. Associates (AssocRICS)

3. Fellowship (FRICS)

For appraisers in the United States that already have a professional designation like the MAI or the ASA, it may be possible to bypass some steps of the designation process.
