Appraisal Institute AI-GRS and AI-RRS Designations

Designations for Review Specialists

In 2014, the Appraisal Institute established programs for two new designations that aim to address the growing importance of risk assessment and due diligence in today’s economy. They are the AI-GRS and the AI-RRS.

Members (in good standing) of the Appraisal Institute that are currently designated as an MAI or SRA can earn one of the new designations through a modified certification process. Non-designated members of the Appraisal Institute must complete a comprehensive application and certification process to earn one of these designations.

Appraisal Institute – General Review Specialist
Abbreviated as AI-GRS

Candidates must:

- Be a state certified appraiser

- Have good moral character

- Uphold a strict code of professional ethics

- Hold a college degree

- Complete additional coursework and pass subsequent examination

- Have over 4,500 hours of experience (experience must satisfy AI’s criteria)

Appraisal Institute – Residential Review Specialist
Abbreviated as AI-RRS

Designed for professionals that specialize in residential real estate

Candidates must:

- Be a state certified residential or general appraiser

- Uphold a code of professional ethics

- Hold a college degree

- Complete coursework and pass several examinations to prove knowledge

- Demonstrate thorough, comprehensive knowledge of residential appraisal

- Have 3,000 hours of experience (in accordance with AI criteria)
