MAI Designation for Appraisers

What does MAI stand for?

The MAI designation is awarded to experienced, commercial real estate appraisers that belong to the Appraisal Institute. Although many believe that MAI stands for “Member, Appraisal Institute”, MAI is not an acronym. The MAI is only an abbreviation used to identify an appraiser that has met the following criteria.

MAI candidates must:

- Uphold a code of professional ethics

- Hold a college degree

- Have over 4,500 hours of experience in commercial, residential, or industrial appraisal (beyond those needed for state certification)

- Demonstrate comprehensive knowledge of the principles of valuation and appraisal, especially as it pertains to commercial appraisal

- Submit completed appraisals for review

- Complete a continuing education requirement

- Pass several examinations
