What is the Appraisal Institute?
The Appraisal Institute is one of the leading professional associations of real estate appraisers in the world. The organization took shape when the American Institute of Real Estate Appraisers (AIREA) and the Society of Real Estate Appraisers joined forces in 1991. Currently, the Appraisal Institute has over 20,000 members, organized in many regional and local chapters.
Designated members of the Appraisal Institute are widely regarded as highly qualified and very capable appraisal professionals. When hiring a real estate appraiser, make sure to ask about their credentials, memberships to professional associations, and their level of experience.
The Appraisal Institute awards two main designations to its members. They are the
SRA
and the
MAI
. Each candidate must undertake an intensive accreditation process to earn either designation. In 2014, the Appraisal Institute introduced
two additional designations
to incorporate the growing importance of risk assessment in the appraisal industry.
