Types of Associations for Appraisers

What are the different professional associations that real estate appraisers can belong to?

1. American Society of Appraisers
The American Society of Appraisers (ASA) is a non-profit organization of nearly 5,000 appraisers. The membership includes appraisers of all disciplines, from personal property and real estate to jewelry. The mission of the organization is to promote professional excellence in the appraisal industry and establish standards and best practices. The ASA also awards the professional designation of ASA, or Accredited Senior Appraiser.
2. National Association of Independent Fee Appraisers (NAIFA)
The National Association of Independent Fee Appraisers (NAIFA) is a leading organization of professional real estate appraisers. Their objective is to advocate for appraisal professionals and the industry as a whole. Members are expected to adhere to a strict code of ethics and professionalism. In addition, they are encouraged to further their knowledge by participating in continuing education programs. NAIFA offers several designations to its exceptionally well-qualified professionals. They are the IFA, the IFAA, the IFAS, and the IFAC.
3. National Association of Realtors
The National Association of Realtors (NAR) is one of the largest trade associations in the United States. Their membership is made of real estate agents, brokers, counselors, appraisers, and other industry professionals. The mission of the NAR is to facilitate the professional development of those in the real estate industry by providing educational resources, while also protecting the best interest of all property owners. Real estate appraisers that are a part of the NAR are expected to maintain their independence and impartiality at all times. The National Association of Realtors offers two designations to appraisers: the RAA to residential appraisers and the GAA to general and commercial appraisers.
4. Counselors of Real Estate (CRE)
The Counselors of Real Estate is an invitation-only, professional organization for real estate advisors. Membership is determined by peer recognition as a leading professional in the industry. Members include brokers, appraisers, attorneys, bankers, and other executives. All members must have at least 10 years of experience in the industry and they must hold a senior position in their current firm. The mission of the organization is to provide support and opportunities to the leading counselors in the field. The organization also helps to facilitate networking between its members, including the exchanging of ideas and expertise.
5. Appraisal Institute
The Appraisal Institute is one of leading organizations in the appraisal industry in the United States and across the world. The organization has over 20,000 members. The Appraisal Institute promotes a profession code of conduct and sets standards for best practices. In addition, they award professional designations, advocate for the profession as a whole, and publish appraisal literature. The Appraisal Institute offers four different professional designations to those members that meet the necessary qualifications. They are the SRA, the MAI, the AI-GRS, and the AI-RRS.
6. Real Estate Counseling Group of America
The Real Estate Counseling Group of America is a relatively small group of some of the top appraisers and real estate consultants in the United States. Its mission is to unite experts in the field of valuation in order to facilitate the exchange of knowledge and expertise.
7. National Residential Appraisers Institute (NRAI)
The National Residential Appraisers Institute is an organization of real estate brokers, appraisers, and agents. Their objective is to advance and support the profession, in addition to empowering individuals within the industry. They expect their members to adhere to a code of ethics and continuing fostering the development of their professional knowledge. Additionally, they offer four designations to appraisers and market analysts
8. Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS)
The Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors is an independent organization of construction and property professionals. Although it is headquartered in the United Kingdom, it is growing rapidly in the United States. They are not only an association of professionals, but they also serve as regulators. Members include real estate appraisers, project managers, land surveyors, and financiers. Their goal is to serve as an educational resource to their members. About 20% of their members become Fellows, or "Chartered Surveyors".
9. National Society of Real Estate Appraisers (NSREA)
The National Society of Real Estate Appraisers sets high standards of professional conduct and ethical behavior for its members. They award several designations, in addition to encouraging all of their members to continue to their educational pursuits, in order to improve their individual performance and the status of the profession as a whole.
10. National Association of Real Estate Appraisers (NAREA)
The National Association of Real Estate Appraisers is a professional organization of real estate appraisers that was founded in 1966. They currently have over 10,000 members. Their mission is to provide universal standards and guidelines to their members in order to encourage the further professional development and continued success of all of its members. The NAREA offers two different designations. Appraisers can become a CREA (Certified Real Estate Appraiser) or a CCRA (Certified Commercial Real Estate Appraiser).
