The CREA and CCRA Appraiser Designations
By ProMatcher Staff
NAREA's Professional Designations
The NAREA is a professional association of real estate appraisers in the United States. The organization confers several designations to qualified members. The two main designations are the CREA and the CCRA.
1. CREA (Certified Real Estate Appraiser)
This designation is for appraisers who specialize in residential real estate appraisal. This may include single-family homes, condominiums, vacant land, and in some cases, small commercial properties. All CREA candidates must have a state license prior to designation.
2. CCRA (Certified Commercial Real Estate Appraiser)
This designation is for appraisers who specialize in commercial real estate appraisal. This may include commercial, industrial, and residential properties. All candidates for the CCRA must have a general appraiser’s license prior to applying for this designation.
Other NAREA Member Designations:
Affiliate Member: Available to individuals who are not yet licensed or certified as appraisers, but they are on track to becoming state certified.
Registered Professional Member: Available to real estate agents, underwriters, and brokers who are interested in staying current on the latest in the appraisal industry.
Registered Trainee Appraiser: Available to trainee and apprentice appraisers who are not yet eligible to become a CREA or a CCRA due to a lack of experience.
